Medical Records Clerk

Medical records clerks file, store, organize, and monitor patient records in a healthcare facility. Therefore, a medical records clerk must be extremely organized, have strong time management stills, and firmly understand HIPAA regulations. The role of a medical records clerk requires interpersonal and interdepartmental communication. Furthermore, professionals in this role must have strong computer skills, as this position requires data entry, chart coding, and digital storage. 

Job Responsibilities

  • Assemble, update, and store patient information
  • Copy, fax, and electronically transfer data 
  • Adhere to HIPAA standards and practices 
  • Retrieve offsite medical records 
  • Review records requests 
  • Gather and distribute lab reports to physicians 

Qualifications and Skills 

  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent experience 
  • 1+ years of experience in a clinical setting preferred 
  • Proficiency with word processing software
