Phlebotomist

A Phlebotomist is a clinical specialist mainly responsible for drawing and processing blood samples. Phlebotomists may use a vast amount of techniques to collect blood samples and process blood tests, and they must become familiar with a range of equipment used for blood prepping and processing. Phlebotomists are often required to maintain adequate and accurate patient paperwork and label test tubes, which diversifies their daily clinical duties.

Job Responsibilities

Qualifications and Skills

  • High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent experience
  • Active state phlebotomy certification
  • 1+ years of experience in a healthcare setting preferred

Although the exact qualifications necessary for a phlebotomy position will depend on the requirements of each healthcare facility, there are many common skills that every Phlebotomist should have. Some facilities prefer phlebotomy applicants to have prior experience with data entry and online medical record management. However, all applicants must have strong communication skills to explain information during blood draws and elaborate on blood panel orders.
