Every industry needs data analysts, especially healthcare providers. Data analysts help to keep companies running as efficiently as possible by performing detailed investigations into all business practices. They use information gathered from various resources in order to assess the status of the company and identify areas of improvement. Through a detailed mathematical understanding of the company, data analysts are able to help the company eliminate unhelpful practices and suggest better ones.
What does a Data Analyst do?
Key job responsibilities for a data analyst may include:
Pull data from various sources
Organize and select important data for projects
Perform detailed mathematical analyses of data using computerized models
Extrapolate patterns and trends from data
Eliminate useless or unhelpful data
Analyze quality of data
Draw conclusions from and recommend business practices based on data
Assess risk based on data
Generate reports based on analysis of the company’s past performance
Use predictive modeling to suggest ways to grow the business
How to Work as a Data Analyst
Data analysts are typically given designations (I, II, or III) based on work experience, education and acquired skills. Less experienced analysts will be given more routine work and assist project leaders in researching and compiling data for reports. Those with at least a few years of experience in the field will have more autonomy and will be given more detailed analytic responsibilities. Those with a several years to decades of data analytics experience will oversee projects, identify areas of investigation and work more closely with upper level management by providing data-driven guidance for the company.
Skills and qualifications needed:
Basic knowledge of healthcare terminology and data systems
Proficiency in Excel, SQL, Python or R
Attention to detail and organizational skills
Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities
Familiarity with EHRs and HIPAA compliance

Data analysts are found in a variety of environments both inside and outside the healthcare industry, including but not limited to:
Hospital systems and academic medical centers
