What is a Financial Analyst?

The financial analyst’s primary role for the company is to compile data, organize it, assess it and communicate the financial status of the company using analytical models. They are necessary for measuring the company’s actual financial standing against predetermined financial goals, identifying areas for improvement, predicting the financial impact of the company’s actions and creating plans based on data.

What does a Financial Analyst do?

Key job responsibilities for a financial analyst may include:

  • Compiling and organizing financial data

  • Accurately recording and storing financial information

  • Creating and assessing periodic financial reports for the company

  • Using data to predict future financial impact of company decisions

  • Identifying company waste

  • Generating reports on company expenses, investments, capital, net worth and profits

  • Analyzing financial impact of trends and new developments in the field

  • Presenting data and findings to upper level executives

How to Work as a Financial Analyst

The status of the financial analyst will depend on education, former experience and skills acquired. Entry level applicants with under two years of experience will receive the designation of Financial Analyst I. They will work directly with senior-level analysts to assist them in their projects and acquire experience.

Intermediate financial analysts (II) require about five years of analytic experience and will be given more complex tasks with less supervision. Financial Analyst III’s will have at least eight years of experience and will be capable of designing projects, leading analytic teams, giving upper level executives advice based on financial data and thinking about big-picture company goals.

Skills and qualifications needed:

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities

  • Proficiency in financial software (Excel, SQL, Tableau, etc.)

  • Ability to work independently and with a team

  • Strong problem solving skills

  • Firm grasp of corporate finance and statistical analyses

  • Ability to communicate findings of complex analyses

  • Organizational skills

Where Do Financial Analysts Work?

Financial analysts are found in a variety of environments both inside and outside the realm of healthcare, including but not limited to:

  • Hospitals and health systems

  • Outpatient clinics and specialty practices

  • Long-term care and rehabilitation facilities

  • Health insurance companies

  • Healthcare consulting firms

  • Government health agencies

  • Remote or hybrid finance roles in healthcare organizations
